being a session musician in NYC

Hello, I've been told that NYC (and LA) is the best place where it's possible to work as a session musician, aka a musician contributing with his skills to the recording of an album/song/commercial (on behalf of a third party) and/or being part of a team of musicians that accompanies singers/artist on a tour.

Is there anyone who has experience in this field or currently is a session-musician in NYC??
